Outdoors, you need high powered, flood lights to illuminate dark corners of your backyard and give would be lurkers, no place to hide.  Another fantastic idea is to have two big dogs in your backyard.  Dogs will bark if they see anything suspicious and once you get to know them, you’ll even know their different types of barks.  I suggest also avoiding clumps of shrubbery and vegetation that could possibly conceal someone from lunging out of the shadows or within the thick.

Other precautions for home security include:

• Having several phones available throughout stations of the home.  This allows you a quick outlet to call for help should you have a burglar.  I recommend using cell phones because these cannot be disconnected.
• Having backup flashlights on hand.  Sometimes an intruder will cut the electricity to leave you in disarray and eliminate options.  Flashlights can help you navigate your way in the dark should you need to.  You probably know your home backwards, but this precaution won’t hurt you.
• Plan an emergency room you can retreat to that you can lock and block entry to once you’re inside.
