In 2010, almost everyone has a cell phone they can be reached at. With this phone line, do you even need a landline phone for your home? I recommend you X the home phone and just go mobile. I don’t even answer the home phone anymore because anybody I want to call me has my cell phone number.

Nevertheless, there are still some advantages to having a land line phone. First, you can refer this number to all the people you don’t want calling you. For example, every time you fill out credit card apps, school registration, or standard business (like opening up a stock account or registering for something at a website) you can forward these impersonal calls to your home line and not have them call your cell phone. I don’t know about you, but I prefer my phone only ring with personal calls.

Another benefit is if you have limited minutes, you don’t have to be in your home chewing up your regular ATT minutes. You can be on the land line instead and talk as long as you want. Plus, if you so choose, the speaker phone is usually much better than that of a mobile phone and you don’t have to worry about blowing up your cell phone’s speakers (I know my iPhone’s speakers seem sensitive and I try not to test them).

A smaller plus is some places and entities still require that you have a landline. For example, I know BlockBuster used to require you to have a landline number and there might be city administrative offices in your area that ask for the same.

Of course, the other side of this is you save about $40/month by not having a land line phone. Pretty gstrong argument against having a landline in the home.
