Do you have to have an Amazon Kindle to read a Kindle ebook?

I recently saw a Kindle ebook I wanted at Amazon but I wanted to know if I could read the ebook I wanted without having the Kindle ereader.  Email correspondence says the answer is no.  Kindle ebooks can only be read on a Kindle.

So what does that mean for me?  I’m buying a Kindle.  I really, really want this ebook (here it is if you’re curious).

Anyways, there are several different types of Kindles and I’ve kinda been wanting one so it’s that guilty purchase I’ve been wanting to make.

But if you look on the link above you can see, you can get a Kindle for as cheap as $79 so that’s not bad at all.

I want to get the Kindle Fire because I can also use it as my tablet ala the iPad 2 without paying $499 for it! If you’re not a tech geek, this Kindle Fire Review site is helpful for regular people in understanding what makes the Kindle Fire a huge value for Christmas 2011 (or you can cheat and buy it early like me).

So can you read an Amazon ebook without the Kindle? If it says Kindle ebook, no.

Do you have to buy a Kindle to read an Amazon Kindle ebook? Yes.

Can you read an Amazon Kindle ebook on the iPad? No.

Amazon Kindle ebooks can only be read on a Kindle. Kindles can come as cheap as $79.
