In general you can expect prices to fall into the mid level thousand dollar range for many defenses.  Supposedly top tier lawyers with experience will possibly charge you more – a lot more depending on their reputation and track record.  Again, the price all depends on who the criminal attorney is, what you have been charged with, and also whether your case actually goes to trial.

Can you get a criminal defense lawyer for free?  Absolutely.  The courts will provide you with a public defender if you cannot afford to hire an attorney.  While some public defenders are helpful, most agree that you will not get the level of criminal defense you would otherwise have with a competent private attorney.  Another alternative if you cannot afford to hire a lawyer is to apply for legal aid at your local legal clinic.

At least in Texas, there is a lot of wiggle room for prices on criminal defense attorneys.  If you ask around, you may be able to locate a strong lawyer at a decent price.
